Lithakia

Lithakia
Lithakia is a relatively large village in the southwestern part of the island, no more than 10 kilometers away from the city of Zakynthos. This is the same region of the beautiful beaches from Agios Sostis to Castello where many locals run hotels, pensions and taverns. Due to its fertile lands and amply flowing water wells, Lithakia has always been know as being an especially prosperous region. The actual village grew along the street up the slope to Kiliomeno.

Village church of PhaneromeniThe Lithakia of old was a well-known market place on Zakynthos. The earthquake and the wheel of time have erased most of the traditional architecture of this area. As one walks up the main street with its few remaining characteristic old wooden houses, one comes to the village center, the “platia” with its “kafenion” and a number of shops. Further up on the main street, between the last couple of houses of the village, stands the bell tower of the former church Agia Marina which alone survived the earthquake of 1953, more or less undamaged.

Special attractions

The village church of Phaneromeni originated in the 14th century and has a carved wooden banister around the altar and a number of important icons. Several of these are from other churches in vicinity that were destroyed.
